Is This The End For Live Service Games?

What do Apex Legends Mobile, Rumbleverse, Knockout City and CrossfireX all have in common? They were all killed by their developers in the past couple of weeks, along with many other live service games.

Live service games, also known as “games as a service” or “Gaas”, have been popular for the better part of two decades with iconic titles like League of Legends, Fortnite, World of Warcraft and Rocket League taking the gaming community by storm.

But is 2023 the year where it begins its descent? Well, yes and no. Though the popular games do not seem to be going anywhere anytime soon, many others have taken the brunt of the impact.

Twitter user @gematsu listed just some of them:

It seems that the reason for the many cancellations are due to the sheer number of live service games in the market now. To take advantage of the trend, many developers spent the last decade or two releasing games in this format. And now, it might have finally become too much.

Many have turned to Reddit to share their thoughts.

This might just be the beginning and we could be seeing more cancellation announcements in the next few weeks and months, but as long as our favourites remain, it may not be too devastating.
