Pokemon Unite: Who’s OP and who’s not?

All Pokemon are created equal. Well, that’s a lie.

Pokemon Unite has hit the Nintendo shop for about a week now and fans have been eating it up. But the game is still far from perfect, especially with certain Pokemon having won the power lottery.

Here are some Pokemon we think might get a nerf in future updates and some who desperately need buffing.

Needs a nerf: Zeraora

Because Zeraora doesn’t evolve, it already seems more powerful right from the get-go. Not to mention, it’s a melee speedster-type, which is already just a little too OP as an offensive role.

If you’ve ever encountered an opponent’s Zeraora, run for your life – except you literally can’t. With just a few Volt Switches or Wild Charges, you’d be dead in a matter of seconds. Its Unite move, Plasma Gale can even take out a few of your teammates at once if your health is already past the halfway mark.

Needs a nerf: Gengar

The formula for success as a Level 7 Haunter is simple: Sludge Bomb, Hex, enemy dead. And before you know it, you’ll be a full-fledged Gengar – deadlier and more annoying than ever.

Hex’s short cooldown period also means that it can be spammed in quick succession and deal heavy damage to multiple opponent Pokemon at the same time. Once you get hit, you might as well pack your bags and get ready to go home.

Needs a nerf: Cinderace

Though Scorbunny starts off slower, once Cinderace levels up, its damage numbers are one of the highest in the game. The ranged attacker keeps enemies at a distance while sniping opponents left and right. Like, where did that Pyro Ball come from and why am I dying now?

And with Feint timed right, Cinderace is almost invincible in 1-v-1 fights, becoming temporarily untouchable (even by Unite moves) and gaining a short burst of speed.

Needs buffing: Greninja

For a fan favourite, it’s a shame that Greninja isn’t as powerful as it is in the main games.

Greninja isn’t the easiest to pick for beginners and will definitely require support in lane. To successfully pull of stealthy hit-and-runs to chip away at opponents’ health, Greninja can afford to have even greater movespeed.

Plus, Waterburst Shuriken, its Unite move, has the major potential to miss completely just because it’s so easy to dodge. To maximise its damage, timing and accuracy are key, which might be a challenge for less seasoned players.

Needs buffing: Mr. Mime

In general, Mr. Mime excels at his support role by confusing opponents, holding them in place and allowing its attacker teammates to bring home the kill.

But of course, Mr. Mime’s moves involve a lot of setups and its long cooldowns for moves like Light Screen, Confusion and Smokescreen—which average around 6-8 seconds—ain’t going to cut it, especially in tight situations.
