A group of educational, media and event players have come together to organise eSports Nexus to help increase the awareness and passion for esports among youths in Singapore.
Three edutech companies – Meraki Academy, Flying Cape and The Lab – worked together to develop the two-day programme.
eSports Nexus is a first-of-its-kind community programme that will teach teenagers the finer points of MLBB. Covering teamwork, critical thinking, communication, leadership, and strategy, it will take their game to the next level. Esports is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world and is fast gaining in Singapore, with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong trying his hand at Dota 2 in 2019. The city-state also hosted Dota 2’s The International 11 finals in 2022 and kicked off the inaugural Olympic Esports Week this year.
Participants who sign up for the event will get first-hand knowledge and lessons from top professionals in the game. These include some of the hottest names in the industry such as Youngin, Sleepy, Gear and Potato.
Daryl ‘Youngin’ Ng is Singapore’s leading esports coach. With more than four years of experience in coaching both professional and community-based strategy games, he has led teams to local championships. He also won a bronze medal with Team Singapore at the 31st South East Asian Games and holds the record for the highest Singapore-placed team in the MLBB world championship.
Lim ‘Sleepy’ Jia Hui is an experienced competitive player looking to represent Singapore in the annual MLBB Women’s Invitational. Under the menteeship of Coach Daryl, she also coaches youths about esports in international schools around Singapore.
Bleed Esports’ Tristan ‘Gear’ Nathanael began his professional gaming career at the age of 15 and won the local championship in his first season. He holds the record for the highest Singapore-placed team for the MLBB world championship.
Another is seasoned MLBB player and coach Andrew “Potato” Lim, who is known for his strategic mind and leadership skills and has made significant contributions to the Singaporean esports scene.
Whether it is gaining some tricks of how to last hit or ganking during the laning phase, or even developing builds for certain characters, these gamers will be there to level up your game.
But while it is a fun and engaging platform for students to dip their toes in competitive gaming, eSports Nexus will also instil essential life skills, cultivate sportsmanship and promote responsible gaming behaviours and habits.
