Detective Pikachu Returns’ New Trailer Includes Multiple Generations of Pokémon

Our favourite electrical mouse is back – and we don’t mean the gaming mouse connected to your computer right now. We’re referring to the yellow mouse that comes with a flat cap, magnifying glass, and the raspy voice of a middle-aged man: Detective Pikachu.

That’s right. The trailer for Detective Pikachu Returns, the sequel to hit Nintendo 3DS game Detective Pikachu, has just been released.

In the first game, players control Tim Goodman, an 18-year-old boy trying to find his missing father alongside a coffee-loving Detective Pikachu. Tim has the special ability to understand Pikachu – a good thing because Detective Pikachu is very talkative.

While the plot of the sequel is not out yet, it features the same two characters solving mysteries and cracking cases.

What makes this sequel stand out is the fact that it will feature Pokémon from across generations. (Of course, we’re already taken in by the trailer featuring a trio of first-generation Poliwags and Politoeds singing “poli poli poli” over and over, but we suppose new Pokémon wouldn’t hurt.)

Detective Pikachu Returns places emphasis on living alongside many Pokémon, and seeing what they do in their day-to-day lives when they aren’t lurking in tall grass, waiting to jump out at you. By visiting various facilities and interacting with other people, players get to see how other owners interact with their Pokémon, making the instalment a refreshing look at the franchise that we’ve come to know and love.

Detective Pikachu Returns will be released on Oct 6 for only the Nintendo Switch. The digital version currently retails for US$49.99.
